Artist Statement
This is the first time I have put a design on the back of a quilt. (Imagine that!) I actually thought of making it a reversible quilt, since I liked the back so much, but with the sleeve and label in the mix, I gave up on that idea.

To me, color and its absence are a fitting description of the Cosmos.

Techniques & Materials
I found several pieces of Judy Robertson's beautiful hand-dyed fabrics in my stash and combined those with some other hand-dyes and commercial batiks. The gradation of blacks to grays in the smaller, background checkerboard was harder to come up with. Some of it was cut out of hand dyed pieces and others were a combination of different blacks and grays I had. I used the pieced checkerboard techniques I teach in my "Improving the Checkerboard" class.
